5 Steps to Developing a Healthy Habit - GB Personal Training

5 Steps to Developing a Healthy Habit

Habits are all around us. Most of the things that you do on a daily basis involve following some sort of habit.

We eat the same foods, shower and get dressed in the same way, walk the same route to work, play the same sports or use the same workout routines. Our whole lives consist of a series of habits.

But why do we use so many habits?

Habits keep us safe, they tell the brain that ?we have done this before so it?s OK to do it again?. Habits take up less mental capacity, and the more we stick to our regular habits the less brain intensive they become. Habits get easier and easier!

We all know how hard it can be to change a deep ingrained habit. The brain and body is less willing to give up a habit that has been entrained.

Our ability to develop habits can work to our advantage, especially when it comes to developing our health and fitness. 30 days and you can entrain your brain to developing a new habit.

Here is my simple 5 Step Guide to developing any habit:

# 1 ? Choose Just One

Don?t overwhelm yourself by try to do too much at once. Start by choosing just one habit to develop. If your goal is to lose weight then choose just one aspect of fat loss that you can focus on and develop into a lifelong habit. So you may choose to eat a better breakfast, start an exercise program, join a fitness class or hire a Personal Trainer.

# 2 ? Keep it Simple

Once you have decided on what habit you would like to develop you next need to simplify. Don?t try to change too much at once. So if you choose to start an exercise program, just begin by performing one or 2 exercises before you shower every morning. If you are looking to improve your diet and lose weight then try to avoid bread for breakfast. Develop one habit at a time. Try to do too much and you end up being overwhelmed and doing nothing.

# 3 ? Model Somebody

We all hear about goals like losing 7lbs in 21 days or running a marathon but these goals can set you up for failure. Rather than thinking about individual goals try to model somebody who has achieved what you want to achieve. So if you are trying to develop a nutritional habit think whether your Role Model would eat that or drink that. If you are thinking about skipping a workout, ask yourself how many times your Role Model skips a workout. Find a good Role Model and be inspired to do what they do.

# 4 ? Develop Routine

Habits are all about routine. The more you stick to the routine the more the brain develops a habit and starts to make it a ?No Brainer? for you. So give your habit a chance. Exercise at the same time each day. Begin by performing the same exercises each day. Eat breakfast at the same time each day. I?m writing this Blog post at the same time as I write everyday. Start a routine and stick to it.

# 5 ? Stick to the Schedule

Habits are simple, you just need to stick to the schedule. Forget about the results and focus on the schedule. Get yourself a calendar and cross off each day. Never break the chain. If you are running short on time one day then do less exercise. Just don?t break that schedule. The longer you can keep going the easier it will get and the more of a habit you will develop.

For more on developing habits I can highly recommend the The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It?s a great read and probably the best overall summary of cutting edge information on Habit Development.

Want to develop an Exercise Habit?

My 12 Week Essential Bodyweight Program includes a daily workout of only 1 or 2 exercises per day and all using no equipment.

Hoku, Solar and Fuel Cell Aspirant, Bankrupt With $1B in Debt

Hoku Corp just filed for bankruptcy in Pocatello federal court according to reports in the Idaho State Journal.

Hoku started out as a fuel cell membrane and materials company, went public in 2005 on little revenue, and then pivoted to becoming a solar polysilicon manufacturer. The company also tried its hand at solar installation in home-state Hawaii with $1.6 million in 2013 revenue, according to reports in Hawaii's Star Advertiser.

The firm's stock was delisted from the Nasdaq last year. The company is now $1 billion in debt to 30 creditors including Tianwei and the Idaho plant's main construction contractor. Hoku is a subsidiary of Tianwei New Energy Holdings, which is an affiliate of China South Industries Group Corporation (CSGC). CSGC is a mammoth firm with 191,000 employees. Tianwei manufactures polysilicon, wafers, cells and modules.

In 2012, in a case of questionable timing, Hoku was looking to open up a long-threatened $700 million polysilicon plant in Pocatello, Idaho -- a factory looking to supply a transitioning and hobbled market. Hoku's CFO and CEO resigned around that time while the company was having difficulty paying its Idaho electric bill. Hoku had received $280 million in prepayments from PV panel manufacturers such as Hanwa SolarOne, Tianwei New Energy, Jinko Solar, and and a small prepayment from Suntech for polysilicon to be delivered between 2012 and 2016. The firm has been threatening to build the Idaho factory since 2008 -- when polysilicon was more expensive than today.

The firm never really had a technological differentaition in silicon manufacturing or in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM)? fuel cells. Nor did it seem to have a strategic business plan, other than to go public and pay its executives.

Perhaps its Chinese Fortune 1000 conglomerate parent will engineer a financial rescue of the firm.

Purported less expensive iPhone parts assembled for video, knocked off for Android

When you hear "cheap iPhone" or "budget iPhone" think "less expensive iPhone", akin to how the Mac Mini is less expensive than the Mac Pro, and the iPad mini is less expensive than the full-sized iPad (or the iPod nano was less expensive than the classic iPod). That's what this video, and the accompanying photos, purportedly show off as well. Techdy:

When we hold the budget iPhone in our hands, the plastic chassis does not feel cheap at all. Unlike the plastic build quality of the Samsung Galaxy phones, the plastic material used on the budget iPhone feels more sturdy.

Rumors of a less expensive iPhone have been around for a while now, and make sense for a number of reasons. Apple can address saturation levels in the high end market while also preventing discounted devices from previous years drawing customers away from new devices, and also create something more affordable for emerging markets. Win. Win. Win.

Check out the video and the photos, imagine them in iOS 7 colors, and let me know what you think of the approach, the design, and its chances in the market?

(Bonus: You can buy an Android knock-off for the low, low price of yeahbutwhy? now!)

Buccaneer Energy Limited (ASX:BCC) Letter of Intent - Offshore Projects Farm Out

Sydney, July 5, 2013 (ABN Newswire) - Buccaneer Energy Limited (ASX:BCC) is pleased to advise that a non binding Letter of Intent ("LOI") has been executed with a US based public company ("Farm-In Party") to farm-out the following projects that are currently 100% owned by the Company:
- Southern Cross Unit;
- North West Cook Inlet Unit; and
- North Cook Inlet Unit - Deep Oil Rights.

The Farm-In party will pay 100% of the costs associated with two wells in each of the above projects for which it will earn a 49% working interest.

In addition the Farm-In Party will be granted an option to earn a 49.0% working interest in the Company's 100% owned onshore West Eagle project by paying 100.0% of the costs of the first two wells.

Buccaneer will retain a 51.0% working interest and the role of Operator in all of the above projects. Additionally, the Company will retain its existing working interest in both the Kenai Loop Project (100%) and Cosmopolitan Project (25%).

The LOI contemplates that on completion of the above wells and the assignment of a 49.0% working interest to the Farm-In Party that all future expenditure on the above projects will be based on individual working interest ownership.

The LOI stipulates that the Endeavour jack-up rig must be used on all off shore drilling that is subject to this LOI.

The LOI provides the basis for the parties to negotiate and if agreed, execute, a binding Exploration and Development Agreement ("Agreement") at which time further details will be disclosed. The LOI acknowledges that the proposed transactions will be subject to satisfaction of conditions, including board approval by both parties. The LOI will automatically terminate on 15 September 2013 if an Agreement has not been executed and either party may withdraw from the LOI at any time.

If the Farm-In party proceeds to drill all 8 wells subject to this LOI, total expenditure by the Farm-In Party is expected to be between US$150.0 - US$200.0 million.

A Map of the Entire Internet, 1977

A Map of the Entire Internet, 1977

Once upon a time, you could draw a map of the known Internet. Here's what the world of networked computers looked like in 1977 when ARPANET was still just a huge government-funded science project. It's actually incredible that the network proliferated this much in the eight years after the first four-node network was established back in 1969.
