Baseball: Dad's dream comes true for Dodgers' Ricky Nolasco

By J.P. Hoornstra Staff Writer

One night many years ago, Emilio Nolasco was driving the familiar route from Dodger Stadium to his home in Rialto. His youngest son, Enrique - "Ricky," as the world would know him - was in the car. Ricky couldn't have been more than 2 years old.

This was just like any other drive home after a Dodgers game, except that Emilio indulged a crazy thought. He thought about the name of the outfielder he'd been yelling all night.

"Right now it's Rick Monday. Maybe someday it'll be Ricky Nolasco."

Crazy, right?

Today, Nolasco will pitch at Dodger Stadium for the third time in his major-league career. For the first time, he will be wearing a Dodgers uniform.

"It's a dream come true," the elder Nolasco said.

When he was 25, Emilio Nolasco came to the United States from Mexico and found work with a sheet metal company in Los Angeles. He became a devout fan of the local baseball team, a passion that was enabled every time his boss gave out a portion of his season-ticket stash to Nolasco, his wife and his three children.

Emilio's dream had its origins even before Ricky, now 30, was born. It's caught on with a few people in the meantime.

Nolasco was acquired from the Miami Marlins in a July 6 trade for three minor-league pitchers and made his first start for the Dodgers on Tuesday.

About 40 local well-wishers sojourned to Phoenix for the occasion. It was roughly the same camp of 40 that drove or flew to see

Nolasco pitch every time the Marlins came to San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix or Los Angeles.

The group includes Nolasco's parents, uncles, cousins, siblings and teammates from high school and Little League.

Sunday, the group will be larger, "in the few hundreds or so," Ricky Nolasco said.

Nolasco's older brother, David, lost count.

"It's nuts," David Nolasco said. "His phone hasn't stopped ringing since he's been traded. It's even to the point where some people he hasn't talked to in how long are asking for his number, for tickets."

The pitcher believes this is a great thing. He's already gotten the first game in a Dodgers uniform out of the way, and the team couldn't have asked for much more than the seven innings of four-hit ball Nolasco pitched in a 6-1 victory Tuesday.

"I'm an easy-going guy so I felt like I was able to use that (adrenaline) on the mound," Nolasco said. "It's the same game, just a different uniform."

Scott Russell, Nolasco's coach at Rialto High School, agrees.

"He'll be fine," Russell said. "I was glad to see his first start was in Arizona for that very reason - to get the jitters out. He's a big leaguer. He's an experienced pitcher. He knows how to keep his emotions in control. He'll be fine."

His brother isn't so sure.

David Nolasco says he's felt nervous before two of Ricky's games. One was April 5, 2006, when Ricky made his major-league debut in relief against the Houston Astros. The other was his 214th major-league game, Tuesday in Phoenix.

"I didn't want him to go out with a lot of emotions and let that take over," David Nolasco said. "Those times were probably the only times I was nervous. Probably Sunday will be the third time."

As a result, David has a policy.

"I told a lot of people that I don't want him worrying about a pass list, tickets, the first couple weeks," David Nolasco said. "I told them he's just going to leave a pass list for only a couple family and close friends. I don't want to take away from what he's doing on the mound. It kind of worries me because i know him as a person. He wants to help everybody and make sure everybody goes. I want him to focus on pitching. It's been a circus the last week."

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has seen it before, the hometown kid pitching for the first time with friends and family looking on. The atmosphere, he believes, either works for you or against you, with little room in between.

Heck, there was a time Mattingly himself wanted to play for either the Cincinnati Reds or St. Louis Cardinals, the teams he followed growing up.

(Maybe Mattingly is the only one who didn't always imagine himself playing in Yankee pinstripes.) That changed over time.

"You think about all the family you have to deal with, people coming out of the woodwork," he said. "`I remember playing against you in Little League.' You just want to do your job."

It's in the Dodgers' best interests that Nolasco feels right at home right away. While Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu entered the weekend series against Colorado with a combined 22-10 record, their other starters were 8-18.

Nolasco, who had a 5-8 record and 3.85 earned-run average for the Marlins this season, is expected to restore some balance to the back end of the rotation.

"It's kind of a shot in the arm for the team," Mattingly said. "This helps."

General manager Ned Colletti said he's had his eye on Nolasco awhile but had to wait for him to become available.

"Ricky isn't someone who's going to lose his focus or competitiveness because he is pitching close to where he grew up," Colletti said. "If anything, in his case, it could make him better."

To Nolasco's family, the trade to the Dodgers was more than a shot in the arm. It's the wild fantasy Ricky wouldn't indulge while trade rumors circled in recent weeks.

Rather than imagine himself wearing Dodger blue, Ricky said, he always tried to stay even-keel.

His father did not.

"Always we wished that he could pitch for the Dodgers," Emilio Nolasco said. "He pitched in Dodger Stadium for the Marlins, but not for the Dodgers. I really wanted to see if the Dodgers could get him.

"When he called me and said `I've been traded to the Dodgers,' I was kind of screaming to myself. It was good news for me, for Ricky and for everyone in the family."

Idris

Idris is the homeland of the Shadowhunters and is protected by Demon Towers, forcing demons out and protecting the city, the only way to bring them down is to wipe demon blood on them from the inside?an almost impossible feat.
Idris is in Europe. It is a small country between Germany and France, with protective spells and wardings all around, all over the borders, preventing mundanes from entering. When they attempt to cross the border into Idris, they are simply transported into the next border without noticing.

Idris is mostly forest, littered with vampire nests and werewolf packs. There are mountains that can only be crossed in high summer without freezing to death. There is a small system of towns throughout Idris. These towns are not very big and are all sort of oriented around the one city, Alicante, which is also known as the Glass City.

Alicante

Alicante is the only city in Idris. It is often called the Glass City because of the presence of the Demon Towers that guard the city against demon attacks, reflecting light and looking like glass. The entire city is lit and powered by witchlight. The houses throughout the city are built from all eras. The Gard, the meeting place for the Clave, sits atop a hill at the edge of the city. There are stores throughout the entire city that display and sell a wide array of objects from weapons to clothes.

Government and politics

The Nephilim follow a strict set of rules set out in the Shadowhunter's Codex. There are many rules and guidelines that must be followed.

The Clave

The Clave is the general organization of all Nephilim, particularly, it is the governing body of the world of half-humans, headed by the Council.
The Clave has different branches in different areas of the world, with Institutes are the seats of power. Every active Shadowhunter in an area belongs to a certain Clave, such as the Conclave in New York, Enclave in London.

The Covenant

Covenant is the Law upheld by the Clave.

Mission

The goal of the Nephilim is to end the plague of demons on Earth. They are dispatched to every place on Earth to fight against demon hordes. The fight even continues after death. Their bones are used, as the bones of demon hunters are powerful protection, to fortify important buildings.

Culture

As with all populations, the Nephilim have developed their own culture and traditions. They have traditions and habits that, though not official laws, are expected of them.

Births

Newborn Shadowhunters have spells cast on them to protect their minds from demonic influences. These rituals protect the Shadowhunters from demon visions for example. The rituals are performed by a Silent Brother and an Iron Sister.

Marriages

"The ritual is taken from the Song of Solomon. 'Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death.'"

The color of marriage is gold. Shadowhunter women generally wear gold dresses and men black ceremonial gear, marked with gold runes. Marriages are often done in The Accords Hall in Alicante. The Shadowhunters mark each other with permanent runes of love and commitment over their heart and arm, signifying their love and devotion toward one another.

Mundanes

Relationships with mundane, and any other species other than fellow Nephilim, are generally looked down upon by the Clave. However, a Shadowhunter may marry a mundane if one chooses to, but they must leave the Clave and are stripped of their Marks. In the old days, another choice was for their lover to ascend, which meant drinking from the mortal cup to become a Shadowhunter if approved by the Clave. This was soon outlawed because it did not always work and sometimes ended with the mundane becoming Forsaken, suffering a lot of pain, or going mad.
Since Nephilim blood is dominant, if a Shadowhunter has children with a mundane, their children will still be Nephilim.

There are three rules for those who leave the Clave. First, the Shadowhunter must sever contact with any and all Shadowhunters they have ever known, even their own family. Second, they cannot call upon the Clave for help. And third, the Clave can still lay claim to their children.

Ascension

In the 1800's, Long before it was outlawed and discovered to be dangerous, Shadowhunter who wish to marry mundandes may appeal to the Clave to have their lover turned into a Shadowhunter through a process called Ascension. After the Shadowhunter applies to the Clave for an Ascension for their partner, the Clave is required to consider it for at least three months, and the mundane will be studying to learn about Shadowhunter culture. Mundanes who Ascend to become a Shadowhunter may then choose their own Shadowhunter last name, and may pick from one of the old Nephilim names.

Deaths

Shadowhunters often die young. The fight against demons kills off many of them. Therefore, when a Shadowhunter dies in battle, the words Ave Atque Vale and their name are spoken. This means "hail and farewell" in Latin. Their bodies are burned to ashes and laid in the tombs. The color of funerals is white. They do not use black because that is the color of fighting and it isn't appropriate. They also wear red runes for mourning.

Friendships

Parabatai is the term for two Shadowhunters who fight alongside each other. These Shadowhunters are partners and are particularly close to each other. Shadowhunters must choose their parabatai before they turn 18.
The runes drawn by one's parabatai are stronger than those used by another. Also, there are some runes that can only be used by parabatai. It is forbidden for two parabatai to fall in love with each other. If this happens, they will be separated. Most Shadowhunters don't have a parabatai, so they are not very common. In a Shadowhunters life, they can only have one parabatai, even if their partner dies.

Colors

"Black for hunting through the night
For death and mourning, the color?s white.
Gold for a bride in her wedding gown,
And red to call enchantment down.
White silk when our bodies burn,
Blue banners when the lost return.
Flame for the birth of a Nephilim,
And to wash away our sins.
Gray for knowledge best untold,
Bone for those who don't grow old.
Saffron lights the victory march,
Green will mend our broken hearts.
Silver for the demon towers,
And bronze to summon wicked powers.?

?Shadowhunter children's rhyme

Colors mean different things to Shadowhunters than they do to mundanes. Black is the color of their gear; white is for mourning; gold for weddings and red is ceremonial.

Downworlders

Downworlders are hybrid creatures. It is the widely used term to refer to beings that are said to be part human and part demon, even said to be the demonic counterpart of Nephilim, who are part human and part Angel.
Downworlders include the Children of the Moon (Werewolves), the Children of the Night (Vampires), the Children of Lilith (Warlocks) and the Fair Folk (Faeries). Also mentioned are peris, ifrits, nixies, and mermaids. Although once mentioned by Jace, it was never made clear if zombies really counted as Downworlders or if this was a joke.

Downworlders cannot be Marked, but can share Shadowhunter abilities, thanks to the Alliance Rune, created by Clary Fray, which is the only rune they can be Marked with.

Every fifteen years, the Accords are signed between the Downworlders and the Clave, the Nephilim. According to the Accords, as long as the rules stated here are not broken, they can live in peace without bother and may even provide each other help when the need ever rises. Also, each of the four races has been accorded a seat on the Nephilim council as of the third installment in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Glass.

Protesters of Zimmerman acquittal march in Calif.

A protester in support of Trayvon Martin in Los Angeles after the acquittal of George Zimmerman late Saturday.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

Trayvon Martin supporters, many dressed in hoodies, are demonstrating their anger at the acquittal of George Zimmerman through mostly peaceful protests from coast to coast.

About 200 people marched down Mission Street in San Francisco on Saturday night at 8 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) carrying yellow signs that said ?the whole system is racist? and ?the people say guilty,? NBCBayArea.com reported.

MSNBC's Craig Melvin reports from outside the Sanford court house, which has been peaceful with the exception of some chants of "no justice, no peace" and "the system failed us." Aerial footage in San Francisco shows a march seemingly in protest of the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial

A large protest in New York is was scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Union Square and there are dozens of other protests planned around the country throughout the day.

Saturday night?s march in San Francisco dispersed peacefully a little after 10 p.m. local time (1 a.m. ET), but a similar protest in downtown Oakland ended with numerous buildings and cars being vandalized and protesters setting random fires, NBCBayArea.com reported.

The verdict also sparked protests in Los Angeles, where police said about 200 demonstrators gathered in Leimert Park, the AP said.

The Sacramento Bee reported that protesters in the California capital chanted: "What do we want? Justice. When do you we want it? Now. For who? Trayvon."

Local churches across the country were also organizing rallies and urging supporters to wear hoodies in honor of Martin, who was wearing a black hoodie when Zimmerman shot him in the chest on Feb. 26, 2012.

George Zimmerman has sued NBC Universal for defamation. The company strongly denies the allegation.

Is This 5-Inch Phone BlackBerry's New Hope?

Looks like BlackBerry?s might be interested in getting in on the enormo-phone scene, with the first leaked image of a phone destined to be known as the A10 seemingly confirming the existence of a 5-inch model?that could upgrade the Z10 with curvier lines and a newer version of BB?s mobile software.

According to the image, obtained by BGR, the A10 is known internally under the development name Aristo, and is pictured running version 10.2 of BlackBerry?s latest OS. The phone itself appears to be a little more rounded than the Z10, with the display said to be a Super AMOLED model running at 1280 x 720 resolution and an unspecified dual-core processor managing the business. It wouldn't be surprising if BlackBerry is contemplating a super-sized phone?but for now, we'll have to wait and see. [BGR via CrackBerry]

Stocks drop off after record-breaking surge?

stocks

Stocks were mixed on Friday but but major averages rallied sharply for the week, with the Dow and S&P 500 posting their second-best weekly gains this year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which had surged 1 percent to a record-breaking finish on Thursday, closed just 3 points ahead, at 15,464.30. Boeing led the blue-chip laggards, while Bank of America rose.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq finished higher for the seventh-consecutive session. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slipped below 14.

Among key S&P sectors, financials led the gainers, while industrials slipped.

Boeing slumped 5 percent following a fire on one of the company's troubled Dreamliner airliners at London's Heathrow Airport. Earlier, the airplane maker's stock had hit an all-time high at $108.15 a share.

"This is bit of an intermission but it's probably normal after some of the moves we've seen recently," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.

"It wouldn't be unusual to see a bit of a pullback after this strong run, but we're in earnings season, where the results will dominate all other variables?expectations are quite low and management teams seem to have done a good job of setting the bar at ankle height, so it seems likely that we'll have more positive surprises."

Among earnings, JPMorgan Chase edged higher after the Dow component and the largest U.S. bank by deposits beat expectations on both revenue and earnings. And Wells Fargo also gained after the financial company topped the Street on both ends.

They were the first major U.S. banks to report second-quarter earnings, setting the tone for the rest of the sector which will issue results throughout next week. Earnings expectations for JPMorgan in particular were high, as the bank has beaten analyst estimates in 12 of its last 13 earnings reports.

Major averages soared more than 1 percent on Thursday, with the Dow and S&P 500 closing at record highs, boosted by assurances by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke that the central bank would not remove its stimulus policies for some time.

(Read More: Cramer: Should You Celebrate or Fear the All-Time High?)

On Friday, Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Charles Plosser said the Fed should wind down quantitative easing by the end of 2013. He said policy makers should treat 6.5 percent unemployment and 2.5 percent inflation targets as "triggers," not "thresholds."

On the economic front, producer prices gained 0.8 percent in June, according to the Labor Department, edging past expectations for 0.5 percent. Core producer prices, which exclude volatile energy and food costs, edged up 0.2 percent.

Meanwhile, Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers' preliminary July consumer sentiment index fell to 83.9 from the final June figure of 84.1. Economists in a Reuters survey expected a preliminary July sentiment index reading of 85.0 compared with 84.1 in the final June report.

European shares pared their earlier gains to close slightly lower, after posting four days of successive gains. Meanwhile, the yield on Portugal's benchmark government bonds surged, following demands for a renegotiation of its bailout program.

After the European market close, Fitch slashed its credit rating on France to AA-plus from AAA with a "stable" outlook citing the country's uncertain economic outlook and the need for structural reform.

And shares in Asia traded cautiously ahead of Chinese growth data next week. China is expected to post second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) numbers on Monday, after a slew of disappointing trade and manufacturing reports. Investors' nerves were piqued on Friday by reports that the Chinese finance minister was forecasting annual growth of only 7 percent, below the country's official growth target of 7.5 percent.

(Poll: Will China Experience a 'Hard Landing' in 2013?)

"We see no hard landing but rather steady growth. Our 7.7 percent GDP forecast is based on a stronger consumption component, making up for the slowdown in investment," wrote Steve Wang, research director at Reorient Markets, in a note.

Texas legislators to vote on abortion bill delayed by filibuster

Eric Gay / AP

Lt. Governor David Dewhurst strikes the gavel as the Senate adjourns on July 11 in Austin, Texas.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Texas legislators moved to overturn a temporary victory by state Democrats and standard bearer Sen. Wendy Davis, beginning debate Friday on a bill containing new restrictions on abortions procedures.

The bill in the Republican-controlled Senate, which comes two weeks after the legislature failed to put the restrictions to a successful vote in its first special session, would ban most abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy, place new requirements on which facilities could perform the procedures, and would limit a woman?s ability to induce an abortion by taking a pill.

Abortion rights advocates, including Planned Parenthood of Texas, have said that the new law would effectively shut down all but six of the facilities where abortions are performed in the state.

Pro- and anti-abortion activists flooded the Texas Capitol on Friday afternoon, setting the stage for a dramatic ideological showdown. Abortion rights advocates wearing orange were holding gynecological devices and signs, while anti-abortion advocates dressed in blue carried images of fetuses and Bible verses, according to The Associated Press.

A vote could take place Friday evening or possibly early Saturday morning.

Gov. Rick Perry has made passing House Bill 2 a priority and said he will sign it into law. Democrats in the legislature have said that while there may be little they can do to stop the bill?s passage, they plan to challenge it in federal court.

?We do not have the numbers to stop it,? said Democratic Sen. Royce West of Dallas, according to the Associated Press. ?As soon as it?s signed by the governor, it will be challenged ? we believe the whole bill is unconstitutional.?

Texas is only one of several states looking to tighten rules for abortions.

North Carolina's House passed a bill Thursday that directs state regulators to change standards for abortion clinics to bring them in line with more regulated outpatient surgical centers.

Missouri's governor Friday let a bill become law without his signature that requires doctors to be in the room for the initial dose of a drug used in medication abortions.

Wisconsin?s governor signed into law last week a measure similar to Texas' that forces abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. That law was blocked by a federal judge.

The biggest fireworks have come in Texas. Last month, GOP lawmakers were prevented from carrying out a vote on House Bill 2 as their first special session came to an end after Davis delivered an 11-hour filibuster that was cut short when state senators ruled she had committed three rules infractions. Raucous protests from Davis supporters in the gallery prevented lawmakers from carrying out a valid vote on the bill.

Security has been tightened in anticipation of the final vote Friday. Dozens of additional state troopers surrounded the gallery and monitored the hallways Friday, according to the AP.

Troopers inspected bags of people streaming into the halls of the capitol. Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Rick DeLeon said no props would be permitted in the gallery, including tampons, perfume bottles, and moisturizers, the AP reported.

Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin, the leader of the legislature?s Democrats, said he stepped in to prevent troopers from confiscating feminine hygiene products from women hoping to view the debate, according to the AP.

Democrats will not be able to prevent the bill from moving forward again by staging a filibuster. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said he will clear the 467-person galley if necessary to get a vote.

?I hope we don?t get to that point but if we do, we do,? Dewhurst said, according to the AP. ?This is a democracy and we will not be interrupted from doing the people?s work by an unruly mob.?

The fight over the bill has drawn national attention from abortion rights advocates disturbed by the spread of new restrictions, as well as anti-abortion activists who say the new law would protect the health of mothers and fetuses.

Former contender for the GOP presidential nomination Rick Santorum appeared in Austin on Thursday, and said that ?Texas is the center of the pro-life debate in the country right now,? according to Reuters.

(AP) ? Top U.S. and Chinese officials are wrapping up annual strategic and economic talks that have yielded greater cooperation on reducing greenhouse gases but again exposed Washington's frustration over cyber theft it says is emanating from the emerging Asian power.

Secretary of State John Kerry, who came to Washington for the start of the two-day talks Wednesday, was returning to his wife's hospital bedside in Boston as she recovers from a seizure-like episode. His deputy, William Burns, will take his place at Thursday's discussions.

The gathering is taking a place a month after the U.S. and Chinese presidents' summit in California, which tried to set a positive tone in relations between the two world powers. Officials are looking at ways to build cooperation, even as they hash out deep-seated differences.

They are discussing barriers to trade and investment, the nuclear program of Chinese ally North Korea and other matters, including Iran and Syria's civil war.

Thursday's agenda starts with a round table of Chinese and U.S. officials and business leaders at the Treasury Department. Washington wants Beijing to expedite economic reforms and reduce state involvement in the economy; China has its own concerns about screening of its companies that want to invest in the U.S.

The most tangible outcome of Wednesday's talks was an announcement of new initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The two sides agreed to cooperate on cutting emissions from vehicles and coal combustion, and to promote more efficient use of energy in buildings, transport and industry. Implementation plans will be ready by October, the State Department said.

That builds on an agreement between President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping in June to work together on reducing hydrofluorocarbons, a potent greenhouse gas used in refrigerators, air conditioners and industrial applications.

The two sides have also discussed cybersecurity ? now a prominent U.S. concern in its relations with China.

Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that cyber theft against U.S. companies is "out of bounds and needs to stop." Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi only said that cybersecurity is among the global challenges the U.S. and China should work together on.

U.S. officials are resisting China's attempts to compare their concerns over U.S. surveillance for intelligence gathering ? as revealed by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden ? with American concerns about theft of intellectual property and proprietary business information.

Would This New Urinal Design Make Men Wash Their Hands?

Would This New Urinal Design Make Men Wash Their Hands?

Here's a problem about guys: many of us don't wash our hands after using the restroom. It might be general grossness or everyman laziness or being too trusting your own hygiene or being too drunk or taking on a drive through mentality with a urinal but if you monitor a men's restroom, you'll see many folks skip the sink.

But this new urinal design by Kaspars Jursons tries to solve the hand washing problem by combining the sink with the urinal, two birds with one stone kind of thing. The thinking is that putting the sink on top of the urinal and making it sensor-activated, men will wash their hands because it is right in front of their face.

The thinking is wrong. And the thinking is unbelievably gross.

Here's what will likely happen with these Frankenurinals: men, with their terrible aim and never ending urine, will manage to piss inside the sink and stain the tap a disgusting shine of morning yellow. It's going to be foul. In fact, with this new urinal + sink design, I'd bet there would be more piss in the sink, on the handle, around the receptacle and all over the place than there would be inside the urinal. I'd rather deal with non-washed hands than this.

Men are disgusting. Don't encourage us to be more disgusting. [Jursons via DesignTAXI]

Students To Protest Major California College's Accreditation Loss

City College of San Francisco students, faculty members and California lawmakers on Tuesday planned to protest the community college's loss of accreditation.

The school, the largest college in California, was notified last week by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges that it will lose accreditation on July 31, 2014, leaving students without federal financial aid and potentially voiding their ability to transfer credits to other schools. The college, which currently serves more than 85,000 students, has until July 31 to appeal.

The accrediting commission, a nonprofit regional agency recognized by the federal government, recommended 14 changes in 2012, but said the school has only responded to two.

Students, faculty and supporters planned to march Tuesday afternoon in front of U.S. Education Department offices in San Francisco to protest the accreditation decision.

"The actions of the ACCJC ?- an organization accountable to no one -- have unnecessarily put at risk the livelihoods of the nearly 2,500 hard-working men and women at the college," Tim Paulson of the San Francisco Central Labor Council said in a statement. "What's more, their move to deny CCSF accreditation has imperiled the future of San Francisco's working people, who rely heavily on a CCSF education for workforce training, language learning, and a pathway to better futures for themselves and their communities."

The California Federation of Teachers has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education accusing the ACCJC of shredding documents to thwart a federal review of the commission's actions regarding the community college. The ACCJC insisted there were no irregularities in its CCSF accreditation decision.

Brice W. Harris, chancellor of the California Community Colleges, responded to the accreditation decision by calling for the appointment of "a special trustee with extraordinary powers" to rescue CCSF. The California Community Colleges' Board of Governors followed through on Monday, appointing Robert Agrella as special trustee with control over CCSF finances.

Cheri M. Sixbey, executive assistant to ACCJC President Barbara A. Beno, said the group's decision is not yet final.

The "main obstacles to the college's turnaround are lack of financial accountability as well as institutional deficiencies in the area of leadership and governance," Sixbey told HuffPost.

Many of CCSF's problems were identified by a 2006 evaluation team, Sixbey noted, and the ACCJC has provided "extensive professional advice and support" to help the school come into full compliance with commission standards.

"Recent action by the state Chancellor?s Office may help the college change its approach and be able to meet the same standards as 133 other institutions in the Western Region," Sixbey said, referring to Harris' call for a special trustee. "The protestors need to join the many people at City College working towards this end."

Faculty union president Alisa Messer, an English instructor at the school, said the accreditation commission was no help making those improvements.

"We want a stronger, better college, but in many instances direction from the ACCJC has moved us in the wrong direction," Messer said in a statement. "The Accrediting Commission should be accountable for the impact of its actions."

Denormalizing smoking: Making the case for banning cigarettes in parks and on beaches

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Many state and local governments banned smoking in parks and on beaches on the basis that passive smoke is a risk for non-smokers, cigarette butts pollute the environment, and seeing people smoke poses a long-term risk to children. Researchers say the evidence for these claims is far from definitive and policymakers pushing for smoking bans will need to make a stronger argument to overcome the opposition and gain the public trust.

Glenn Farrington Wants to Kickstart a Whole New Way of Writing ...

ComiXwriterLogoSloganOne of the most interesting comics-related projects currently on Kickstarter has to be Glenn Farrington and Steven Sashen?s ComiXwriter.

A new script software, Farrington had the idea to launch the first one that?s specifically tailored for comic books, as opposed to being a screenplay software with a comics template. It was, as you might expect if you?ve ever tried to find such a product, a project born out of frustration and the exasperation that such a product didn?t already exist in the marketplace.

You can check out the Kickstarter video below, and check out their site (they?ve raised over $12,000 on the way to a $35,000 goal) here.

Farrington, who is also working with First Comics on a number of upcoming projects, has worked as a comedian, screenwriter, software designer and more before making his first foray into graphic novels with the upcoming original hardcover Lives, which will debut at San Diego Comic Con International. He joined us to speak about ComiXwriter, and the process by which he decided that it needed to exist.

ComicBook.com: What made you decide to do it? It seems like something that ought to exist already?

Glenn Farrington: Right, and it seems like anything I come up with, that?s always the background thing. When I came up with the idea for Digital Seas, everyone?s like, ?You men there?s no way to do do Internet on a cruise ship? They?ve got everything else.? I was like, nope?and the whole time I was working on it I was like, ?someone?s gonna think of this someone?s gonna think of this?? and this is the same?this is frustration. I hate to say something was born out of frustration but really that?s what this became.

I sent an e-mail to Larry Young, actually, is how it all started, out of the clear blue saying I had an idea for a graphic novel. It was based on a screenplay of mine that had won a lot of awards but when my manager put it out there were two other plays in town that were kind of like it so it got bumped around. So I was like, ?This would make a great idea for a graphic novel,? and so I did all the research online. I?d never written?I mean, I?ve read comics my whole life but I?d never written any at that point. This was four years ago, maybe five at this point, and I had seen a quote by Larry Young on one of the comics websites when I was going through trying to figure out who I could send this to. I knew enough not to send it to the Big Two, that would be stupid, but I was very naive about the world, then, when it came to comics. I sent him an e-mail because it seemed like this was the type of story he wanted. He said ?Meet me at Comic-Con,? and I went down to Comic-Con and he said, ?Sure, let?s do it.?

So the first thing I did was look for software because I knew it had to be?you know, it was one of those things, it?s gotta be there. I?m a screenwriter for a living; I?ve got so many options that it?s crazy and I couldn?t find one. And I called a buddy of mine, Josh Gilbert, who?s another screenwriter and he said, ?You know there?s a template right in Final Draft, you can use that, it says ?Comic books.?? And I tried it and it was okay, it was fine but it was mor elike a screenplay format and it ddn?t really do a lot of the stuff that I wanted to do with comic books and the sample scripts I had gotten weren?t exactly like that. And it kind of sucks because I got used to that so now I kind of like that format but it?s still not what I wanted to have as the basic offering.

ComiXwriterCastVideoSo next thing I know, I kept bothering my wife that there should be soemthing and I?d always complain about it to people. And Larry said, ?Well the reason there isn?t is that everybody writes scripts different?everybody. I can show you the next ten scripts I get and I guarantee you that every one of them will be formatted differently.? I told him that? sbecuase there?s no standard?you don?t have to stick to the standard but there should be some basic structure that everything follows. He said there is?the pages and panels?and when I asked him, ?So why isn?t there a software, he said ?I don?t know.? So I shelved it aside again but I kept?every time I would have an idea for what I thought the structure would be, I have a drawer full of napkins, pieces of paper, even the back of a McDonald?s bag, of just notes of what I thought should be in the software. Every time I would run into like a blocked point of frustration?

?like Steve Bryan I?m doing a comic series with and he would send me via Dropbox the art to look at and I pulled up the art on my computer and I couldn?t pull up the art to look at it and pull up my script and keep it in the same plane. Every time I clicked on one it would go behind and it would drive me crazy. So I printed out a paper script and I?m looking at the artwork and doing all the notes there and then I had to do the notes again online and to me the simplest thing was to have a viewer where the artwork would come up, the page would come up that would be your script and then you could edit the script within it and make notations on the artwork, same exact file, and then you could save it as a PDF and send it back. How hard could that be?

Well, it turned out that was pretty hard. But I knew that if we could do that then everything else would be easy because everything else is basically just an accelerated word processor that knows what our needs are. So I coded like a really rough beta and when I called Steve just to get some ideas on the pitfalls?I?ve known Steve ever since I was a [stand-up] comic?even further than that, we both worked in a magic shop in Washington DC called Al?s Magic, which is where I think both of us got our skills in being able to just discuss things and our sense of humor because Al was a huge presence behind the counter and his selling point was so huge. And when I became a stand-up comic years later I found out that he became a digital comic. When I started Digital Seas I found out he started Scriptware. We kept going in these parallel paths. I called him up because I knew that with everything he went through with Scriptware, he would be able to tell me all of the problems I would need to look out for.

T-ShirtBecause the Digital Seas software I did was far more complicated. You?re talking about using satellite protocols to be able to talk to the ship. The graphic user interface was easy because when I was at AOL we did stuff that was similar to that but whenever anything seems really easy is when I always get nervous because I know that?s when it?s the most complicated. That?s all that life has ever taught me is that when you say, ?Oh, this is going to be a breeze,? next thing you know it?s four in the morning and you?re pulling your hair out.

So I knew that Steven would be able to tell me the pitfalls because he had gone through it with Scriptware. And he goes, after an hour into the conversation we?re getting all excited about it and I said, ?Steven, do you want to do this with me?? He said, ?I thought this is where we were going with that. Yeah, I?d love to do it.? So I sent him some of the code I?d been working on and he said what needed to be changed and this is why I was having a problem there, and because we were both, even though we were both in very creative, fun, outgoing things, we?re still like geeky damn nerds. You look at my office, I?ve got figures all over the top shelf of a bookshelf. I?m looking at everything from 007, RoboCop to Frank Black from Millennium. I mean, one shelf is all screenplays the next shelf is all magic books, the next shelves are all graphic novels. So it was just a perfect fit. So once I realized we could do the collaborating editor, and we started investing our own money, I said the hardest thing about this is just going to be getting it out to the masses to let them know that this exists.

And he wasn?t actually the first one, someone else had suggested Kickstarter to me but I wasn?t a fan of Kickstarter because I didn?t understand it. I thought that Kickstarter was begging. That?s how it felt to me, was that people were begging for money and I didn?t want to be a part of that. So it was actually again a conversation with Larry Young where he said, ?No, no, it?s really more about pre-sales. I mean, look what Jimmy Palmiotti and a bunch of guys are doing on here.?

So we went down that path and we realized it?s really an all-or-nothing thing and I said, ?Well, it?s a great way to find out if there?s interest out there, that?s for certain. Because at the end of the day, I kinda figured if it didn?t fly I would just fund it myself which I didn?t want to do?who want to dip into their own pocket to take a risk? Any entrepreneur will tell you never spend your own money. As bad as that sound but at least then in the old days I would take angel investments but I knew that they had an immediate return. which is why Kickstarter bothered me again?these people are sending money with no return. So I felt better knowing that most of the poeple who were buying the software were people who were actually going to use it, and all the other stuff was being bought up by family and friends. It made it feel a lot easier.

But that was kind of the birth of it?every time I tried to do something that was simplistic in writing a comic book script, and I got tired of people telling me just to use Word. To me as a writer, anything that takes me out of the moment is a hindrance. That?s why Final Draft or Movie Magic?that?s why it?s such a great software because you don?t think about that. you?re constantly just writing dialogue or exposition. Trying to format it in Word, that was the worst. I?d rather use a template in a much more expensive screenplay software than use Word. And the Marvel Way just isn?t my way. I tried and to me it just needed more structure. I couldn?t go, ?Okay, here?s everything I wrote, now draw something about it.? I know that?s a conversation that over the years I?ve realized people who draw the Marvel way?there?s no talking to them, there?s no other way. That was the golden era, that?s how things are supposed to be done. And I had another guy tell me that this software is going to be a nail to a coffin in this industry. I was like, are you kidding me?

ComicBook.com: I do think that artists are undervalued in today?s marketplace because of the rise of auteur kind of comic writers, but I?ll also say that the reason that has happened is that there are a lot more writers than artists whose names will sell a book.

Digital Seas International_Internet-cafeFarrington: Right. That?s true, that?s true. if I see Mark Waid?s name on something, I pull it right off.

It just got to the point where I knew if I didn?t do it, somebody was going to do it because that?s what pushed me to really get started because I remember what happened with Digital Seas.

When I pushed myself into making it happen, we took a few months putting the original design for a dog and pony show to take to the cruise lines. I realized that the one component I would need is the satellite connection so I came up with the idea of partnering with a satellite company and then taking it to the cruise lines, which is what I did. But when I went to approach the one satellite company that had the majority of the cruise lines?I knew this was the company I had to do it with?they were just about to go with someone else who came up with a very similar idea to mine but it was like these floor-top models. You remember those Pac-Man games at the bar, you?d set one down on the table top? It was just that?they were going to put them all around the ship. And I was like, ?No, I?m going to put in an Internet cafe where you can do upsale on drinks and food and they were like, ?If you hadn?t come to us literally yesterday with the phone call, meeting today, tomorrow I was signing a contract with this other company.? So every time I think about that, I go, ?You know what? Speed to market, let me get it done. I can do it, I know I can do it. Once I had Steven on?originally I was going to use him as a consultant?the speed to market literally went from a year and a half to six months because we know what we can do. Then getting a programming team on top of it? Anyway, it just made sense and I said, ?Let?s just do it.? My wife was so glad to hear that because she was like, ?I?m so tired of you saying somebody should do this!?

ComicBook.com: I don?t think I?ve ever had this conversation, in terms of why it doesn?t exist, but I do know that every time I start a script, I do that Google search to be like, ?Has anybody created this in the year and a half between when I wrote my last comic and now?? Because it just seems like someone ought to have already.

Farrington: I think part of the reasons had to be just understanding the market. If you look at the amount of people in the world who are creators and then you look at the amount of people that are really the professionals making it happen?not that everyone isn?t a creator, but I?m talking about people who are doing it on their own without the Big Two or independents or so forth?if you look at that pie, a very thin sliver of that pie are the ones who are actually doing it on a professional level, quote-unquote.? And people don?t understand fanboys. People don?t understand that market?is there money for that? They don?t see why they should invest in doing this wondering if it will even happen. I?m kind of the perfect storm?I?m the fanboy who has a software background, a business background and I know how to bring things to market.

But I?m not going to be stupid enough to think there?s not somebody else out there like me. I?m not unique. But at the same time it?s hard to think you?re going to jump into a world where it?s unsure whether you?ll get a return on your investment. That of course ultimately made the Kickstarter model even more appealing to me?I certainly would get a sense for what?s going on. But look at Final Draft?they know who their market are. Most people who buy Final Draft are never going to have a screenplay produced. Out here, everybody on the corner is writing a screenplay.

And I didn?t want to do something that was going to be expensive. I mean, my friends that were writing comic books, even a lot of the pro guys, they?re using Final Draft and templates. When I heard Scrivener came out, I was thrilled. I mean?free? Are you kidding me? But then it just ran into the same stuff. So I?m going to do a software that has nothing to do with what I do but it?s going to throw me a bone and let me do it too. And I loved the outlining feature on Scrivener but it still didn?t do what I wanted it to do. And then it was open source so there were people writing their own templates?it was just the fact that you had to shoehorn something in, specially when I have a background in coding. It?s like when you watch film as a filmmaker?you see all the nuances of what it took to make that one scene, from the lighting to the way it was edited to obviously how it was directed, maybe an acting choice. It?s the same thing when I look at code. It?s like, ?Why didn?t they do this or this or this or this? I know you can do it.?

EditorComicBook.com: Well, and every specialized community has that thing. One of the first things I look at when I get a new comic is the lettering.

Farrington: The one thing I?ve learned in just the last seven years with comic book people?and when I was a kid, I was comic book people. I would have those arguments about who could beat up who. But these guys now, they?re adults and they?re having that same argument but they can leave the comic shop and become a whole different person that you could reach and talk to and actually have a debate.? But they go into that shop and it?s like they?re Captain America and the shield goes up; you just can?t reach them.

So I had to be really careful about thinking that this was going to work. But you?re right?everybody just kept going, ?Why isn?t there something like this?? I get at least three or four comments through the Kickstarter comments saying ?I can?t believe no one?s done this. I?ve been waiting for this for years.?

Student debt is crushing baby boomers, too

Baby boomers are sinking in a surprising sea of debt ? on their student loans.

They are the latest victims in the $1 trillion student-debt crisis.

And it?s wiping out their retirement plans and taking big bites out of their Social Security checks.

According to the New York Federal Reserve, 12.5 percent of student loans made to borrowers ages 60 and over are more than 90 days delinquent.

And seniors can forget about any refunds on their federal tax returns ? because Uncle Sam can confiscate those as well to cover their loan debt.

More than 2 million senior Americans now face student-loan debt.

This almost certainly wasn?t what they imagined when they went back to school during the Great Recession, or co-signed a private loan for their kids? education, according to student-loan experts.

?The best intentions can sometimes lead to not-so-good outcomes,? said David Flores, a debt counselor and regional manager for GreenPath Debt Solutions.

Indeed, more and more older Americans are falling behind on student loans, according to the latest data from the New York Fed.

The numbers alone are enough to turn those Boomers prematurely gray. The average senior student debtor owes nearly $20,000. No wonder 1 in 8 of them is more than 90 days delinquent.

Flores is seeing them at GreenPath?s Jericho, NY, office, the numbers rising from roughly one a month when he started back in 2006 to about one a day this year.

Cary Carbonaro?s experience is similar to Flores?.

?It?s a problem,? said Carbonaro, a financial adviser at United Capital in Ridgewood, NJ, and Huntington, NY, who counsels a group of widows who went back to college thinking it was a sensible life choice. But now they are into their 40s and 50s, and facing the tough prospect of trying to pay off student loans.

Twelve years ago, outstanding student debt owed by seniors-led households was practically nonexistent. But today, the total student-loan debt for the 60-plus crowd has grown to $43 billion.

What?s more, signs indicate that this debt is becoming an even bigger problem.

A study by the Pew Research Center in Washington showed that the median bill of senior households with student debt has ballooned almost fivefold since 2001, from $2,200 to $12,400.

And it has far-reaching financial consequences that stretch to Social Security payments. Uncle Sam can garnishee up to 15 percent of Social Security benefits if an older American defaults on federal student loans.

Indeed, last year the government raided the Social Security benefits of up to 115,000 retirees.

Adding more misery, the government can also effectively garnishee the refunds on tax returns if a federal student-loan borrower falls behind on repaying loans.

?That?s the scary part,? said Flores. ?If you continue to let the federal-backed loans fall past due or let them get into a real negative status, [the government] can use any means to try to collect, including taking tax returns ? sometimes without any notice.?

The size of that debt shouldered by older Americans may actually be underestimated.

Carbonaro says that while parents who have co-signed on loans are explicitly on the hook if repayments are missed, in reality, those who didn?t co-sign often wind up in the same boat.

Many parents, says Carbonaro, still feel responsibility for their children well into adulthood.
