Migration in the Americas: US retirees flock to Nicaragua

"In the US, money and beauty are the power, but I am looking for something else," said Kathy Aley, originally from Newport Beach, Calif., who moved to Nicaragua in 2001. "I left because of the greed and the selfishness in that country. I worked as an aerobics instructor for the school district, but I tore my muscles. I have two daughters in the US ? they are 40 and 32 years old. I live here with my eight dogs, 10 cats and my parrot. Every morning, I jog the beach up and down with my dogs and parrot. They need the exercise."

Photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen traveled from the southern tip of South America to the far reaches of Alaska on the North American continent to explore migration in the Americas. What he found both supported and defied stereotypes, which he reported on a website and an app for iPad called Via Panam.

??I came (to Nicaragua) on holiday in October 2000 and while I was watching the sunset on the beach, I knew I had to move here,? said Kathy Aley, now 64, a transplant from Newport Beach, Calif. ?I need the warmth and the slow life.?

Captain Zatara, 53, and Katy, 41: "It was our dream to sail around the world and live and sail in the tropics. We bought our boat in Washington state in 2003. She is a beauty. We came to San Juan de Sur three years ago and we wanted to make some adjustments to the boat ? (now) we are rebuilding it from scratch. In the meantime Katy runs a massage salon, so we earn some money. I think it will take another two years to finish the boat. We have five children, one is with us."

Central America is a growing destination for moderately wealthy Americans looking to leave the rat race behind. In their search for quieter and less expensive places, some have chosen to settle in Nicaragua ? the poorest nation in mainland Latin America, but also the safest, according to The Economist.

One such quiet and affordable enclave is the tranquil bay of San Juan del Sur. In addition to safe harbor for retirement, the location also offers a break from recession and politics.

Nicaragua was recently named one of the most favorable retirement destinations in the world.

Below are some stories of Americans who picked up and moved south for their retirement years:

Fred Goldfarb, 60: "I am from the San Francisco Bay Area. I always had a desire for traveling, and in 2006, I came with my girlfriend to Nicaragua. She didn't like it, so that is where our relationship ended. I had a company in the US and in 2007 I bought 350 acres of land. With my business partner, we build environment friendly houses to sell. In 2008 the market collapsed, we are selling less now than before. I built this house actually to sell, but for the time being I live here. I don't like the politics in the US and the cost of living is very high."

Tom and Patty Lowy (55 and 62 respectively), from the San Francisco area: In 2004 Tom bought land close to San Juan del Sur. "I paid far too much ? now we live here, in our gringonized house," he said. "We brought the TV chairs from the US. I earned good money in the US -- $400,000 a year -- I was a retail broker and I saw the crisis coming. We wanted to leave, we don't like the politics of the US, the Patriot Act, the propaganda from the mass media and the misinformation. Here is a safe place, safe for a nuclear war. We watch US television, but most of our friends are Nicaraguan. We believe we should integrate."

Kadir van Lohuizen / NOOR

Beverly Gene Marte, 74: "Everybody calls me BJ here. I came 10 years ago and I am from Walminton, Calif. I came on a yacht. It was a long trip from Florida, via Cuba, Cayman Islands, Panama Canal. In Costa Rica the yacht nearly sank, it took two years to fix it. In the end I made it to Nicaragua. I don't want to live in the US anymore. Obama ruins the country. Now I have my monkey, Cindy. Years ago I was photo model and I also worked for the US coast guard. The sea is in my blood."

Kadir van Lohuizen / NOOR

The tranquil bay of San Juan del Sur is pictured. Although Nicaragua hasn't had good relationships with the US over the last three decades, it is a popular destination for US citizens.

Curiosity Fires Its Laser For the First Time

The harsh interrogation of Martian rocks has officially begun. Curiosity?s laser-shooting Chemistry and Camera instrument (or ChemCam) took aim at its first mark?a fist-sized rock called Coronation?yesterday.

The ChemCam shoots high intensity beams that excite the atoms in a target until they become glowing plasma. By using Curiosity?s onboard spectrograph to analyze the plasma, researchers will understand what elements make up the pulverized Martian dust.

Coronation?s destruction was meant as a test run for the instrument, but according to a NASA press release, this firing of the ChemCam could be more important than the agency expected. Once the elemental composition of the rock is figured out, researchers can see if the elements popping up on the spectrograph changed at any point during the laser?s 10-second blast. If they do, it could mean that the dust on the outside of the rock is chemically distinct from the interior of the rock.

India urges state banks to increase lending for consumer durables

NEW DELHI | Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:19pm IST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Finance minister urged state-run banks to increase lending for consumer durables on Saturday, saying this would help boost the manufacturing sector which has been caught up in the slowdown of the economy.

"Consumers must be encouraged to buy consumer durables," Palaniappan Chidambaram said after a meeting with chairmen of public-sector banks. "I think the point has been well taken by the banks."

Industrial output in Asia's third largest economy contracted for the third time in four months in June, dragged down by a deep dip in manufacturing, as the economy faces its worst slowdown in almost a decade.

Manufacturing, which constitutes about 76 percent of industrial production, shrank an annual 3.2 percent in June from a year earlier.

"We advised the banks to focus on sectors which deserve credit and which are crying for credit," Chidambaram said. "I think it is important that consumption of durables is supported to a great extent."

Government-owned lenders account for 70 percent of the market in India but their lending decisions are not always driven by commercial considerations.

Most banks have either maintained or reduced their base lending rates only marginally despite a steeper-than-expected 50 basis point repo rate cut in April.

Chidambaram, who took up his third stint as finance minister on July 31, has promised to revive the economic growth by taking measures in collaboration with the central bank.

Bankers said the finance minister advised them to lower interest rates on consumer durables that will help domestic demand pick up and investment in the manufacturing sector.

"Yes, he advised the banks to consider reducing interest rates for consumer durables," Pratip Chaudhuri, CMD of State Bank of India (SBI.NS), India's biggest lender, told reporters.

Chaudhuri said his bank had already reduced interest rates from 11.75 percent to 10.75 percent on some consumer durables.

India's interest rates are among the highest in major economies and the slowdown has renewed calls for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to lower them at a September 17 policy meeting.

Car sales in India rose in an annual 6.7 percent in July, below the industry estimates as high interest rates and a tax rise stunted demand.

"Once we get the investment engine started, I think many of our problems can be solved," the finance minister said.

Syria: clashes near airport in contested Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Government troops fought back rebels near the airport of battle-scarred Aleppo, Syria's state media said Friday, in the first official acknowledgement combat had neared a strategic gateway to the country's largest city.

As fighting raged in both Aleppo and the Syrian capital Damascus, the United Nations announced that Lakhdar Brahimi, a former Algerian foreign minister and veteran U.N. diplomat, would serve as the world body's new peace envoy, aiming to resume efforts for a diplomatic solution to what has become an intractable civil war.

Brahimi, who previously served as envoy to Iraq and Afghanistan, replaces former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who announced he would leave the post by the end of this month after failing to bring about a cease-fire despite months of negotiations.

The announcement came just as U.N. observers in Syria were beginning to pack their things on Friday in preparation to close down their mission. Deployment of the observers was one of the only steps taken under Annan's peace plan. The team was intended to watch over a cease-fire that never took hold, and so was left trying to chronicle some of the more egregious instances of bloodshed.

Both sides have "chosen the path of war," said the U.N.'s assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping, Edmond Mulet. The U.N. plans to keep a small liaison office to support any future peace efforts.

The 17-month-old conflict between President Bashar Assad's regime and rebels trying to bring him down has left some 20,000 people dead, according to estimates by anti-Assad activists. The escalating fight has in the past two months turned to battles in the country's two main cities, Damascus and Aleppo ? once firm bastions of Assad's rule. Rebels have managed to keep fighting in both cities despite facing overwhelming regime firepower.

In Damascus, activists reported heavy shelling and clashes in many areas Friday, including western districts believed to have rebel pockets. Damascus-based activist Moaz al-Shami described the shelling as "nonstop" and said gunners were firing from the Qassioun mountains overlooking the city.

Regime forces have been fighting for nearly a month to crush the rebels' footholds in Aleppo, in the north of the country. Rebels have been driven from some areas, but the report of clashes near the airport suggests the battles could be shifting to new fronts.

Syria's official SANA news agency said "armed terrorist groups" ? the regime's phrase for rebels ? had been pushed out from areas on both sides of the airport, which is located about 15 kilometers (nine miles) southeast of Aleppo's historical center. The report did not make it clear whether the fighting was closer to the international airport or the adjacent military airfield, a base for carrying out airstrikes on rebel sites in the north.

Aleppo carries major symbolic and strategic value. It's the commercial hub of northern Syria and close to rebel-held territory and critical supply corridors to the Turkish border.

Rebels have sought control of the ancient center, dominated by a medieval castle that is part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site. That would deal an embarrassing blow to the regime's claim that its overwhelming firepower can halt opposition advances.

"Those who think that the Syrian Arab army will be defeated are dreaming," said Syria's Foreign Minister Walid Moallem in a state TV interview late Thursday.

Civilians, meanwhile, have been increasingly caught in the crossfire, and many are fleeing to safety in nearby Turkey.

The U.N. refugee agency spokesman Adrian Edwards said 3,500 people crossed into Turkey on Tuesday and Wednesday. Edwards told reporters in Geneva there are now almost 65,000 Syrians in nine refugee camps in Turkey, about 40 percent of them new arrivals this month. In Jordan, nearly 2,700 Syrians have entered since Tuesday, swelling the numbers there to over 150,000.

Beyond the refugees who have fled to neighboring countries, the U.N.'s humanitarian chief Valerie Amos estimated that as many as 2.5 million people inside Syria need relief assistance.

The core of Assad's military and political power appears to remain in place, but major cracks have emerged in the wider reaches of his regime. They include high-level military and political defections and the ability of rebel guerrillas to stage bombings and abductions in the heart of the capital, Damascus.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who visited Syria's neighbors Jordan and Lebanon this week, told France's Europe-1 radio Friday that he was told "there will be new defections on a large scale." He gave no other details.

Fabius also defended France's refusal to send weapons to the Syrian rebels, despite their appeals for military help. He claimed rebel backers Qatar, Saudi Arabia and others are sending arms to the rebels ? although there has been no evidence of sharply enhanced military firepower by the anti-Assad forces.

"We Europeans decided on an arms embargo," he said. "We are not going to contradict our own positions."

In Lebanon, tensions from Syria have spilled over into the volatile patchwork of factions backing the rebels and others firmly behind Assad's regime, such as the Iranian-backed militant and political group Hezbollah.

In the most prominent incident yet, a powerful Shiite Muslim clan claims to have taken more than 20 Syrian nationals and a Turk hostage in retaliation for the seizure of a family member by rebels in Syria this week. The clan said Thursday it was calling off "military operations" and would halt abductions for now.

Another captive was taken by unknown gunmen. Turkey's Foreign Ministry said a Turkish truck driver, Abdel Basit Erslan, was seized as he was driving in the Beirut suburb of Choueifat. It was unclear who was behind the abduction Thursday night.

The U.S. and Turkey issued security warnings for Lebanon.

On its website, the U.S. Embassy called on its citizens to take extra security precautions, adding that it had received reports of a higher chance of attacks on U.S. nationals. Kidnapping, it added, was another possible threat. The embassy also announced the suspension of the Fulbright and the English Language Fellow student exchange programs.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Lebanon and urged Turks already in the country to take safety precautions.

Arab Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE called this week on their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately.

Financial life in a big town ? Romney: I paid at least 13% in taxes ...

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Thursday he never paid less than 13% in taxes, batting back criticisms that he hasn?t paid enough to the federal government.

?I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past ten years. I never paid less than 13%,? he said on the campaign trail in Greer, S.C. ?I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. I paid taxes every single year. ?

The presumptive GOP nominee has faced criticism over the release of his tax returns, including a charge by Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid that Romney paid no taxes in ten years. Democrats want Romney to release more tax returns than the full tax returns for 2010 and a summary for 2011 he?s produced already.

In declaring he?s paid more than 13% in taxes, Romney is describing his effective tax rate, the percentage of his actual income he gave to the federal government. Over the past two years, Romney?s effective tax rate was 14.5%, based on the records he?s revealed already.

Effective tax rates are always lower than top income tax rates, due to credits, deductions and exemptions that cancel out all or much of the income tax many Americans would otherwise owe in taxes. Some 80% of Americans have an effective rate below 15%, according to the Tax Policy Center unsecured personal loans.

For families making $50,000 to $75,000, the effective tax rate is 5.7%. From $75,000 to $100,000, it?s 7.2%. And if you make $200,000, it goes up to 9.9%.

However, households at the highest income brackets ? like Romney?s ? make a lot of their money from tax-advantaged investments, such as capital gains and tax-free bonds. And they tend to have a lot of itemized deductions, which can greatly reduce how much they owe the tax man.

?Most of us don?t get most of our income from capital gains and dividends,? said Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center. ?Romney is in that group of people who really, really benefit from low tax rates on capital gains and dividends.?

Romney?s financial disclosures suggest his net worth is as high as $264 million, making him one of the wealthiest candidates in history to seek the U.S. presidency.

Despite Romney?s assertions of paying taxes, Sen. Reid is not taking back his accusations.

?We?ll believe it when we see it,? said Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson. ?Until Mitt Romney releases his tax returns, Americans will continue to wonder what he?s hiding.?

heres-how-apple-is-telling-cable-companies-it ... - Business Insider

Illustration: Ellis Hamburger

?

Apple's invasion of television may not be the revolution everyone dreams of, but that doesn't mean it's not going to introduce some revolutionary new features.

Jessica Vascellero and Sam Schechner at the Wall Street Journal have new details on Apple's vision for the television market.

Sadly for many people, Apple's still going to work with cable companies, which means consumers won't be free of $100+ cable bills. But for those $100+ bills, Apple is going to make the user experience entirely more delightful if it can get the cable companies, as well as content companies, on board with its plan.

Here's what Apple is pitching, according to Vascellero and Schechner:

  • Apple wants to make what amounts to a souped-up version of Apple TV that can function as a cable set-top box.
  • You would be able to start any show at any time using a DVR that stores TV shows on the Internet.
  • The TV interface would look like an iPhone or iPad, with icons that users navigate. (Perhaps it looks like the current Apple TV interface with a few more icons?)
  • The new interface is supposed to be better and easier to use than the current cable box interfaces. (A pretty low hurdle to clear.)
  • There would be a way for people to share on Twitter or Facebook what they're watching on TV.
  • Users would be able to get the entire season of a show on demand, as opposed to a few episodes the way cable companies offer now.

Hulu

Apple TV now

It all sounds like a much better TV experience, but people shouldn't get their hopes up just yet. Apple not only has to get cable companies on board with the plan, but the content providers, as well.

The cable companies only have rights to do so much with the content they broadcast. Apple would have to convince companies like Viacom, the NFL, MLB, Time Warner and others to sign up.

These companies are not dummies. They're not going to just walk into a negotiation with Apple and say, "Sure guys, take whatever you like." They going to ask for some money. And that money will then be passed on to users.

So, the questions that remain are how much are they looking for, how much is Apple willing to pay, and how much will it cost users?

Until those questions are answer, the talk of Apple building a better way for people to watch TV is just talk.

But, boy, is it exciting talk.

Facebook is Not the Problem: Friendship in an Online World ...

When I?m interviewed by reporters about friendship, I?m often asked about my feelings about Facebook.? And then they seem surprised, and a little disappointed, when I simply answer, ?I love Facebook as one of the tools we can use for our friendships.?

Facebook isn?t to blame!

Facebook Is a Tool, My Friends

I have read many others rant and decry how Facebook is ruining our relationships, but I don?t agree.

Can Facebook ruin a relationship? Yes, I suppose so.? But I wouldn?t say that it is the fault of Facebook, but rather the responsibility of the people who are using Facebook.? After an awkward face-to-face conversation with someone, we don?t then declare that we should never meet a friend for dinner.? After a phone call ended with someone in tears, we don?t then say that phones are the demise of friendships.? And the same is true of Facebook. It is a tool that we can use to maintain (or damage) our friendships.

To say that Facebook can be an amazing tool to help our friendships is not the same as saying that it?s the perfect tool for every setting and situation and person.? But that?s the responsibility of the people using the tool, not the fault of the tool. (see my link at the bottom for a post about some Facebook limitations.)

Facebook is Not to Blame for Your 5 Complaints
Here are the five most common complaints I hear from people who have either closed down their accounts in protest or have refused to ever join:

  1. ?Facebook is too shallow?everyone seems to only brag about the good in their lives or talk about inane things like what they ate for dinner.?? Yes, that can be true.? But how is that different from most of life? Many family get-togethers, high school reunions, networking events, and dinner parties can fall prey to that trap as well. But those events are still valuable for other reasons. There is still a level of bonding and connection that can happen in this realm.? We may not be hearing all aspects of someone, but we?re still learning about them.? We can?t just refuse to engage with everyone unless it?s really intimate and meaningful? truthfully we can?t maintain more than a handful of those relationships and we need more support in our lives than that.? Rather than blame Facebook for simply capturing what we do in real life, react the same way you would if you were at an event? find a couple of people you want to get to know better and engage with them.? Comment on their photos, write them a personal message, ask them a follow-up question to their status update.
  2. ?Facebook makes me feel bad about myself.? No,that shows you your areas for growth.? A tool is not responsible for your feelings. Yes, Facebook may show us how many more people are having babies, retiring, going on vacation, or hanging out with friends, but the goal isn?t to shut out everything that makes us feel insecure as much as it is to do the work of feeling secure and happy.? That is not Facebook?s fault unless we only find our worth in comparing our lives to others.? And that is not the life we want.? We want to be people whose peace isn?t dependent upon what someone else is or isn?t doing. Rather than blame Facebook for making us feel bad, we can use it as gymnasium for our souls to practice cheering for others (give thumbs up, say congrats!), gather information about what we want more of in our lives, and get clear about how we can show up online and offline with more self-worth.
  3. ?It?s offensive to find out big news from friends through Facebook.? While I do think there are some conversations and friendships where Facebook may not be the best choice of tool, I will say that when it comes to a friend announcing something? that is her moment, not yours.? You feeling offended means you?re making this about you when it?s about her.? If she gets engaged and just wants to shout it on the Facebook rooftops? then let her. Let her have her moment and express it however it feels best to her. That isn?t about you or your friendship? be very careful that you?re not taking personally what isn?t meant to be taken personally. Rather than blame Facebook, I?d suggest that we remember that the way we find out doesn?t limit the way we respond. Be sure to comment and celebrate her when you see it on the wall? she undoubtedly wants people to know.? But if your friendship is deeper than that, be the one who drops a card of congrats in the mail, leaves an enthusiastic voice mail telling her you can?t wait to hear all the details, or shoot off an email to ask when you schedule a time to take her out and celebrate her.
  4. ?I hate seeing my friends out doing things without me.? Okay, I get it? it?s never fun to feel like the uninvited person or an outsider. But, again, getting off Facebook doesn?t mean it won?t happen, it just means you won?t know about it.? And you?re stronger than that. It?s the meaning we give to those moments that hurt us.? If you believe your worth is in being her only friend, then we have bigger issues than Facebook. I always champion that the healthiest friendships are where both women have other friends.? It would be nice to get to a place where you could be cheering for her as she builds up her support system, and where you know you?re doing the same.? Rather than blame Facebook, be appreciative that you can use Facebook to get ideas of fun things you want to invite people to do, be inspired by her making new friends, and do what you can to keep contributing to that relationship with her.? Giving her the space to make friends will benefit you in many ways down the road? she?ll demand less from you and soon enough she?ll be able to introduce you to the people she?s meeting.
  5. ?I got my feelings hurt when she de-friended me.?? The number of articles written about this just astounds me. In my opinion we are being way too dramatic about this de-friending option. If you are de-friended? this isn?t your new title, doesn?t reflect your worth, nor does it speak to the future of the friendship you can still have with her. What it does say is that the two of you having something going on between you that isn?t resolved and forgiven. Rather than reacting from your wounded ego, what can you do to help repair this friendship? Facebook is not to blame for our petty fights, disagreements, and frustrations with each other.? Every relationship has them whether we?re on Facebook or not. Being de-friended is the equivalent of needing some space? it doesn?t need to be permanent. Much like the shutting of a door or the hanging up of a phone? it simply says that we have work to do in this relationship.

So there you have my thoughts on this subject! (Not that you asked me! LOL!) I?m looking forward to your comments and reactions? (I think?!)? :)

And, if you?re up for it, be a friend of GirlFriendCircles on Facebook.? It will keep you updated with friendship articles in the news, updates on my books, alerts to friendships events in your area, etc.? And we?ll never de-friend you.? Promise.? :)

On a similar note: A couple of years ago I wrote a blog about the five best purposes of Facebook and the inherent limitations.

Mitt Romney Takes a Stand

Still, you have to hand it to Romney. Chair/table/cooler standing is no easy feat. Many politicians try it, but only a few succeed in pulling it off with dignity. Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt?s expression, as he joins Romney atop a Dave & Buster?s pool table back in 2008 during Romney?s first bid for president, suggests he?d have preferred to remain floor-bound. Romney, by contrast, looks like a man who is passionate about making his pitch to the American people from a table covered in felt.
