Lynn, Massachusetts - A man who once owned an asbestos abatement business in Lynn, Massachusetts will be spending the next 30 days behind bars because he failed to follow state and federal regulations when removing and disposing of the hazardous material.

According to an article in The Salem News, David Harder was jailed after he confessed to improper asbestos removal at a number of area schools, a public library, and a women?s shelter. He also admitted to leaving two bags full of asbestos debris in a Lynnfield storage facility because he didn?t want to pay to have it disposed of properly, which involved bringing it to a waste facility that accepts hazardous materials.

In several cases, it was determined that Harder had left asbestos debris behind at his jobsites. This included the Lynn Public Library and the Lynn Woods School, officials said. That means anyone present at the site could have encountered the material and inhaled its fibers, which can cause mesothelioma cancer and other lung problems.

Harder?s lawyer said it was his lack of business experience that caused the problems with the company. Others believe it was simply Harder?s blatant disregard for environmental laws that caused him to handle abatement and disposal improperly. Many pushed for a much longer prison term.

Assistant Attorney General Andrew Rainer, who heads the environmental crimes unit, had urged that Harder be sentenced to at least a year behind bars, pointing out that Harder had been in the abatement business since 1994 and knew the regulations as well as the risks posed by improper asbestos handling.

AT&T announces Q2 2012 results, 3.7 million iPhones sold

AT&T announces Q2 2012 results, 3.7 million iPhones sold

AT&T has announced their second quarter results, and this time around the iPhone accounted for 3.7 million or almost 73% of the 5.1 million smartphones sold. 22% of those were to new AT&T customers. Net income was $3.9 billion, up from $3.6 billion, in the year-earlier quarter, and consolidated revenues totaled $31.6 billion, up 0.3 percent . Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive officer, said:

We executed well across the business and posted another strong quarter with growing revenues, expanding margins and double-digit earnings growth. Our mobile Internet leadership continues, with solid gains in smartphones and tablets, plus our wireless margins have never been better. And most impressive, with this growth, we also achieved our best-ever postpaid wireless churn, which points to the premier experience customers receive on our network. All of these things add to our confidence and enthusiasm looking ahead.

In addition, with disciplined cost management our cash generation continues to be strong. This allows us to invest aggressively in our growth platforms while returning substantial value to shareowners through dividends and share repurchases.

Obviously AT&T no longer enjoys iPhone exclusivity in the U.S., but compared to Verizon, who just recently reported a 45% mix of iPhones in their smartphone mix, the relationship remains lucrative.

The numbers are down slightly from last quarter, when AT&T sold 4.3 million iPhones with a 78% mix. The current iPhone 4S was released back in October of 2011 and the next generation iPhone 5 is widely expected to be released in October of this year. Generally, iPhone sales can slow as rumors of a new model increase and shoppers hold off on purchases until the next generation device appears. Also, rival platforms like Android put out a more consistent stream of new devices, and this year AT&T and Nokia recently launched the Windows Phone powered Lumia 900 as well. (An interesting question is how much, if any, of that 5% different went to Microsoft as opposed to Google.)

Apple announced their earnings later today, and iMore will be providing our usual color and commentary.

More information on AT&T's earnings, including video and full press release, is available via the link below.

Home Care in Palm Springs What is the goal of palliative care?

Senior Care Palm Desert CAPalliative care is an important topics for seniors and the general population.
Most of us do not want to die in the ICU tethered to tubes ? not the quality of life we expect. Yet only 30 percent of us have made arrangements to prevent this from happening. Death and dying is a tough subject for us to broach. Be aware that very few of us will die in our sleep ? most have a slow sometimes excruciating decline to death.
As we get older it becomes important to have a family discussion about what to do if you?re incapacitated in the hospital with not much hope of recovery. Advanced directives such as Do Not Resuscitate (DNR), a Living Will, or Durable Power of Attorney are important decisions to make. Providers are trained to go to heroic efforts to keep patients alive even when all hope is gone. This often results in severe pain and suffering. There have been many horror stories of the pain and suffering from brittle ribs broken during CPR.
I bet you didn?t know that less than one in seven CPR recipients live to leave the hospital (don?t feel bad, many doctors don?t know this). Other studies show that few elderly patients or patients with cancer live to leave the hospital after CPR. Despite the fact that CPR was developed to resuscitate patients in cardiac arrest, CPR is mandatory to rescue the terminally and critically ill, unless there is an advanced DNR directive. One in five people die in intensive care with the last few months of life being expensive, painful, and futile exercises in medical care.
Thanks to palliative care medicine, doctors as well as medical students are being taught the importance of saying the ?D?-word. Palliative (or comfort) care differs from hospice care in that it can happen along with aggressive life-sustaining treatments. Palliative care teams of doctors, nurses, and social workers provide patients and families with the information they need to make painful choices, including decisions to avoid overly invasive care. What patients and their families want is for doctors to be clearer and more realistic about what?s going on.
The aim of palliative care is for patients to live as well as long as possible while preparing them and their families for death.
So, please talk with your family and make arrangements so you can die peacefully and with the dignity you deserve.
Could your aging parent use a little more social activity in their lives? If so, think about hiring a?home care?companion to get them out of the house and more involved with friends and groups in their local area. For?home care?questions call us at (760) 565-0045?or fill out our web form for more information.

Flavors of the Sun: Classic Mexican Comfort Food: Tortilla Soup

?Classic Mexican Comfort Food: ?Tortilla Soup

Classic Mexican Comfort Food: ?Tortilla Soup

by Victoria Challancin

Note: ?All photos but one are taken by my son, Zachary Popovsky. ?Check out Zack's website here.

There are many ways to judge a restaurant: ?the excellence of the food in general (of course), cleanliness, friendliness of the staff, price. ?So many things to consider. ?But for me, when judging the standard of a Mexican restaurant, I look for one thing: ?the quality of its Tortilla Soup.

Often called?Sopa Azteca,?Tortilla Soup can be found throughout Mexico. ?Like most common comfort food dishes, variations abound and every Mexican cook has her own way of preparing it. And every Mexican child of that mother, whether 10 or 60, prefers it just the way mom made it. This particular version is my own, though I confess to not ever making it quite the exact same way each time I prepare it. ?This particular version I tested as Culinary Producer for a Food Network show for Marcela Valladolid, so I know that it works. ?In the end, Marcela chose her own version, which can be seen?here. My own preference is to have a rich chicken broth base, slightly thickened with ground up corn tortillas, not enough to make a really thick soup, but enough to give more body than a plain broth would have. ?I add either an ancho chile or a pasilla chile to the basic thickener of tomatoes, onion, and garlic. ?I also always add a sprig or two of epazote, that quintessential Mexican herb, to my broth. ?The cheese could be sharp Mexican cotija, asadero, Manchego, or Oaxacan (for more on Mexican cheeses see my post explaining them and how to use them here). ?If you don't have access to Mexican cheeses, you can substitute mozzarella or Monterey Jack. ?Serving the complex, smokey?chipotle chiles on the side allows the diner to add whatever degree of heat he or she prefers.Whatever style of tortilla soup you prefer, you should end up with a perfect blending of rich Mexican flavors, a harmony of tastes, a symphony of texture, flavor, heat, and comfort.

Lining a skillet with aluminum foil proved to be too messy for television and Food Network, but trust me, it is a great technique to use at home as the roasting tomatoes and onions tend to stick to your pan and make quite a mess. ?Using aluminum foil makes for quick, easy clean up--and who doesn't want that, right?

San Miguel readers of this post will write and ask me who, in my humble opinion, has the best tortilla soup in town. ?For me, it is Media Naranja, where it is consistently good--rich, but not too tomatoey, spicy, but not killer, gooey with cheese...perfect.

Ancho chiles: ?Zack would not be pleased if I said this was his photo--it's not. ?It's mine.

Ancho simply means "wide" in Spanish. ?It is a dried form of the chile poblano though many cultivars exist. ?Dark, ruddy brown and very wrinkled, the ancho glows a cranberry red when held up to the light. ?When rehydrated, it turns a brick red. ?Generally, the ancho is considered to be about a 3 out of 10 on the heat scale. ?Its delectable flavor, redolent of dried fruits like figs, prunes, or dates, as well as ?a complexity that enhances everything it touches, makes it a very popular chile, the most popular dried chile used in Mexico. ?It also commonly appears in American-style chilli powder and is used ground as an addition to desserts, especially chocolate ones. [Yes, I spell the fruit "chile" and the American dish or powder "chilli"]

Cook's Note: ?The blended corn tortillas act as thickeners. ?This soup should not be as thick as a cream soup, but should have some body. ?Four to six tortillas should be sufficient for this. ?I usually add the herb epazote, Chenopodium ambrosioides, to my broth, but where I made this version in Los Angeles, I didn't have access to it. ?I usually make my broth with chicken necks, backs and a few feet, plus half a head of garlic, a white onion (don't use yellow ones as the flavor is just wrong for Mexican cooking), and a few sprigs of epazote, or for other purposes other than tortilla soup, ?cilantro or even mint. ?A black pasilla?chile can be substituted for the chile ancho, if preferred, but note the confusion that in some areas of the US, ancho chiles are actually called pasilla, in which case you are using an ancho anyway! ?See my notes on Mexican cinnamon below.

Recipe: ?Tortilla Soup

Sopa de Tortilla

(Recipe by Victoria Challancin)

Serves 6

6 large plum tomatoes

1 small white onion or a 1-inch-thick slice of a large white onion, peeled

4 garlic cloves, unpeeled

1 medium-large ancho?chile, stemmed, seeded, and torn into large pieces

6 cups rich chicken broth

4 to 6 corn tortillas

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

6 corn tortillas, cut into 1/2-inch wide strips

Canola oil, for shallow frying

6 to 8 canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce

Mexican sour cream or cr?me fra?che, for serving

2 Haas avocados, peeled and diced into 1/2-inch cubes or slices

1 1/2 cups shredded Mexican melting cheese or mozzarella

For the Soup:

LIne a heavy saut? pan with aluminum foil. ?Place over medium-high heat until hot. ?Put the tomatoes, peeled onion, and unpeeled garlic cloves in the pan. ?Roast, turning frequently until garlic is soft, about 10 minutes. Remove garlic when soft and slightly blackened. ?When cool enough to handle, peel garlic and place in a blender jar. ?Continue roasting tomatoes and onion for another 2 to 4 minutes. ?Remove onion and put in blender jar with garlic. ?Roast the tomatoes, which should be charred and blackened in spots, for another 5 to 8 minutes. ?Place in blender. ?Carefully puree the contents of the blender. ?It should be slightly thick; add two tortillas to the blender with enough chicken broth to blend easily. ?Set aside.

Put the remaining chicken broth in a large pot. ?Add the contents of the blender to the pot along with the ancho chile and 2 to 4 more corn tortillas, depending on the thickness desired. ?Season with salt and pepper to taste. ?Cook for 20 minutes to blend flavors. ?Carefully puree the soup in batches in the blender. ?Return to pot and simmer for 5 minutes. ?Check and adjust seasoning.

For the Tortilla Strips:

In a medium-sized heavy skillet, pour enough oil to reach a depth of 1/2 inch. ?Heat over medium-high heat until very hot, but not smoking. ?Add the tortilla strips in batches and fry until golden and crisp, about 2 minutes. ?Remove with a slotted spoon. ?Drain on paper towels. ?Set aside.

To serve:

Ladle the soup into 6 individual serving bowls. ?Serve whole chipotle chiles, Mexican sour cream, avocados, cheese, and tortilla strips on the side.

A Note on Mexican Cinnamon:
Mexican cinnamon is a loose-bark variety exported from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to Mexico. ?It is soft and easy to break, unlike cassia, the traditional type sold in many grocery stores. ?Look for True Cinnamon, Ceylon Cinnamon, or Mexican Cinnamon or canela to use in Mexican recipes. ?It is available at Mexican or Latin groceries.

Parting Shot: ?Mexican Limes and Mexican ?Crema

For a really authentic Mexican flavor, look for Mexican limes or key limes and Mexican-style sour cream, called crema or crema ?cificada. ?In a pinch cr?me fra?che can be substituted--as can American sour cream if absolutely necessary.

Remember that like life, recipes are meant to be shared, but please ask permission before using text or photos. ?Thanks!

Colorado suspect was brilliant science student

DENVER (AP) ? James Eagen Holmes came from a well-tended San Diego enclave of two-story homes with red-tiled roofs, where neighbors recall him as a clean-cut, studious young man of sparing words.

Tall and dark-haired, he stared clear-eyed at the camera in a 2004 high school yearbook snapshot, wearing a white junior varsity soccer uniform ? No. 16. The son of a nurse, Arlene, and a software company manager, Robert, James Holmes was a brilliant science scholar in college.

The biggest mystery surrounding the 24-year-old doctoral student was why he would have pulled on a gas mask and shot dozens of people early Friday in a suburban Denver movie theater, as police allege.

In the age of widespread social media, no trace of Holmes could be found on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter or anywhere on the Web. Either he never engaged or he scrubbed his trail.

A longtime neighbor in San Diego, where Holmes grew up, remembers only a "shy guy ... a loner" from a churchgoing family. In addition to playing soccer at Westview High School, he ran cross country.

The bookish demeanor concealed an unspooling life. Holmes struggled to find work after graduating with highest honors in spring 2010 with a neuroscience degree from the University of California, Riverside, said the neighbor, retired electrical engineer Tom Mai.

Holmes enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver but was in the process of withdrawing, said school officials, who didn't provide a reason. The school later said in a statement that he left the program in June 2012.

As part of the advanced program in Denver, a James Holmes had been listed as making a presentation in May about Micro DNA Biomarkers in a class named "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."

In academic achievement, "he was at the top of the top," recalled Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White.

Holmes concentrated his study on "how we all behave," White added. "It's ironic and sad."

From a distance, Holmes' life appears unblemished, a young man with unlimited potential. There are no indications he had problems with police.

Somehow, the acclaimed student and quiet neighbor reached a point where he painted his hair red, called himself "The Joker," the green-haired villain from the Batman movies, according to New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who said he had been briefed on the matter.

Authorities say Holmes arrived at the theater dressed in black, outfitted in a gas mask, ballistic helmet, vest and leggings, black tactical gloves and protectors on his throat and groin. He was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and Glock handgun.

Police said he started his attack by tossing at least gas canisters into the theater, where he had bought a ticket for the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," the new Batman movie.

A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing probe into the rampage, said Holmes bought four guns from retailers in the last two months.

Holmes bought his first Glock pistol in Aurora, Colo., on May 22. Six days later, he picked up a Remington shotgun in Denver. About two weeks later, he bought a .223 caliber Smith & Wesson rifle in Thornton, Colo., and then a second Glock in Denver on July 6 ? 13 days before the shooting, the official said.

A high-volume drum magazine was attached to the rifle, an assault weapon, the official said. Police Chief Dan Oates said that a 100-round drum magazine for the rifle was recovered from the scene.

"I'm told by experts that with that drum magazine, he could have gotten off 50 to 60 rounds, even if it was semiautomatic, within one minute," Oates said at a news conference. "And as far as we know, it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater."

Julie Adams, whose son played junior varsity soccer with Holmes, said her son remembered little about the suspect, which was unusual for the tight-knit team.

"I don't think many of the kids (teammates) knew him. He was kind of a loner," she said.

Jackie Mitchell, a furniture mover who lives several blocks from the suspect's apartment building in Colorado, said he had drinks with Holmes at a bar on Tuesday night, though he showed no sign of distress or violence.

After Holmes approached him, "we just talked about football. He had a backpack and geeky glasses and seemed like a real intelligent guy, and I figured he was one of the college students," Mitchell said.

When Mitchell saw Holmes' photo after the shooting, "the hair stood up on my back," he said. "I know this guy."

Holmes is not talking to police and has asked for a lawyer, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case. Police found jars of chemicals in Holmes' booby-trapped apartment with wires nearby, the law enforcement official said.

When he surrendered meekly in the movie house parking lot, Holmes told authorities what he'd done at his residence in the Denver suburb of Aurora, the third most populous city in Colorado.

"Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved," Holmes' family said in a statement Friday. "We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time."

San Diego Superior Court spokeswoman Karen Dalton said there were no records found under his name, not even for a traffic ticket. Riverside County prosecutors also have no criminal record for him, said John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

On Friday morning, police escorted the suspect's father from the family's San Diego home. The mother stayed inside, receiving visitors who came to offer support.

San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown spoke to reporters in the driveway of the Holmes' home, on behalf of the family.

"As you can understand, the Holmes family is very upset about all of this," she said. "It's a tragic event and it's taken everyone by surprise."

The Dark Knight Rises (for iPad)

The Dark Knight Rises iOS game, Gameloft's official action tie-in with Christopher Nolan's smash hit conclusion to Warner Bros.' Batman trilogy, brings hard-hitting street justice to the iPad and iPhone. The $6.99 game lacks Nolan's strong narrative, but captures the look and feel of The Dark Knight movies while delivering what's importanta fun, engaging video game experience that stretches from Gotham City's rooftops to its underbelly.

Batman Begins
Spoiler alert: See the movie before playing the game because the game features not only Bane and Selina Kyle, but also some of the dialogue from the trailers and TV spots. I haven't seen the film yet, so I'm not sure how much of the movie is spoiled in the game. Tread carefully if you want to go into the film fresh. The game spans six chapters (with multiple missions per section) that take place in well-rendered indoor and outdoor settings. You bash baddies in diverse locations ranging from rooftops to subway stations to skyscraper interiors to Gotham's streets.

Gameloft, thankfully, mixes up the action so that gameplay never gets repetitive. You glide from rooftop to rooftop, hop on the Bat-Pod, and fight foes mano-a-mano. The familiar Batman themes accentuate the action, adding a sense of drama and peril. The game saves frequently, so if you blow a mission, you're not set back too far back. That's a welcome touch, especially in a mobile game that you may play in short sessions on a commute or in a waiting room.

The Dark Knight
Combat consists of striking, evading, and countering?each action's mapped to an individual virtual button when you're in close proximity to an enemy. You as the Caped Crusader can can stun enemies from a distance with the Batarang or drag them toward you after ensnaring them with your grapnel gun's cable. You can unleash some truly impressive combo strings (highlighted by very cool slow-motion effects) that are reminiscent of Rocksteady's critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games.

The Tech Shop is where Batman powers up his abilities and related gadgetry. You can increase weapon potency, Bat-Pod capabilities, and also outfit Master Wayne with abilities that make him even more bad ass. These upgrades, naturally, are earned; some are unlocked when you reach a certain level (Bat-Pod weapons are available at level 26), and there is also a system for outright purchase with credits. Yes, credits. You earn them in-game by bringing sweet street justice to urban vermin, but you can also purchase them with real-life cash. The base purchase is 2,000 credits for $1.99.

Knightfall
The Dark Knight Rises does a lot right in capturing the feel of Nolan's movies, but there are a few quibbles to address. Although The Dark Knight Rises features a beautifully rendered Gotham City, the streets are surprisingly barren for a city that's modeled, according to various DC Comics sources, on either Chicago or New York City. It's a mausoleum of a city that could have benefitted from citizens simply strolling down the street.

The camera can prove troublesome, too, which is a direct consequence of having touchscreen controls. As there's no physical button to let you know when your finger has slipped off of it, you can accidentally swipe the screen, which shifts the camera. It took me a bit of time to acclimate to the tap controls so that I wouldn't be fighting villains blind.

Holy Quality, Batman!
The Dark Knight Rises is another extremely solid game from Gameloft, a company that has mastered bringing near-console quality games to the mobile space. It's a tight movie tie-in that manages to avoid disappointment?a rarity in the video-game industry. If you're looking for iOS Bat-action after seeing the film, The Dark Knight Returns is worth a download.

Hot A's beat?Yankees

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Brandon Moss hit a game-ending RBI single with one out in the ninth inning to give Oakland another dose of late-inning dramatics as the Athletics beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Friday night for their seventh win in eight games.

Yoenis Cespedes singled with one out in the ninth off Cody Eppley (0-1) for his fourth hit of the game and went to second on Jonny Gomes' infield hit. Moss, who left the bases loaded twice earlier in the game, lined a single to right field and Cespedes slid in safely ahead of Andruw Jones' throw.

That gave Oakland its 10th walk-off win of the season and seventh in its past 14 home games, bailing out All-Star closer Ryan Cook, who allowed a game-tying homer to Robinson Cano in the top of the ninth.

Smart stretchable super suit to fend off battlefield fatigue

3 hrs.

The military?s futuristic research agency has awarded Harvard University researchers $2.6 million to develop a smart suit that could help improve the endurance of soldiers out in the field.

The proposed lightweight, efficient, and nonrestrictive suit would be made from soft wearable assistive devices that integrate several technologies pioneered at the university?s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.

For example, a stretchable sensor would monitor the body?s biomechanics without rigid components that can interfere with motion. These sensors could detect the onset of fatigue.

What the suit will do when it knows its wearer is tired isn?t clear, though another technology envisioned for it would send out low-level vibrations that boost the body?s sensory functions. This could, for example, help a weary wearer maintain balance.

The suit differs from other super-soldier technologies such as the widely touted exoskeletons, which have large power requirements and are built with rigid components that can restrict mobility, the team notes in a news release.

Though the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is interested in the technology for military applications, similar technology could help increase the stamina of elderly people and improve mobility for people with physical disabilities.

Students Seeking Startup Workshops: Lean Startup Machine Announces Scholarship Program

lean startup machine logoLean Startup Machine wants to bring some young blood to its startup workshops ? on its own dime. The new initiative is called the Branch Scholarship Program, supposedly because it was inspired by the founders of Branch, a startup that aims "to turn the Internet?s monologues into dialogues" and has backing from The Obvious Corporation. Branch co-founders Josh Miller and Hursh Agrawal both received scholarships from Lean Startup Machine last year, and they met for the first time at the workshop, where they decided to drop out of school and start a company.

Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OTA now appearing on some Nexus S variations

Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean

If you've been hanging onto your Nexus S, waiting impatiently for Google to start the roll out of Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean to your device, you won't have to wait all the much longer. It seems as though the update is slowly rolling out as of right now. The update appearing shows as a 114.4MB file and is noted to of have loaded fine on several i9023 models as well as some i9020T models though we've not had much luck getting it load on our i9020T. If you're not wanting to wait for the OTA, you can download the zip file direct from Google servers though you may need to be running a custom recovery to get it on. (We used CWM 6 without any problems.)  And of course, if you're unsure of how this all works best to wait until we get a full flashing guide up for you all.

Remodeling? Lifestyle Trumps Profit | Helena Talbot

While many remodeling projects add important value to a home, the No. 1 reason to renovate is to improve your daily living environment.

According to a survey conducted by Houzz, an online platform for home design and remodeling, among homeowners planning to build, remodel or decorate in the next two years, 86 percent cited ?improving the look and feel of the space? as an important driver for remodeling projects, while only 47 percent cited ?increasing home value.? The gap between these priorities was consistent across all income levels and demographic groups.

Homeowners say they are more likely to cut back in other areas, such as vacations and other big-ticket purchases, than to delay or decrease the budget for their home improvement plans.

Seventy percent of respondents said they would rather cut back elsewhere or do some of the work themselves than take out a loan to finance their home improvement. Even upscale homeowners are taking a hands-on approach to building, remodeling and decorating projects. The survey found that while 45 percent of homeowners at upper income levels ($150,000+) are choosing to hire an architect, interior designer, general contractor or another remodeling or decorating professional to complete a project in its entirety, an equal number of them are combining professional help and DIY efforts, a proportion only slightly smaller than the 49 percent taking this combination approach in lower income brackets.

According to the survey, kitchens and bathrooms are the most popular remodeling projects, with 48 percent of respondents planning a bathroom remodel, and 45 percent redoing a kitchen in the next two years. An added bonus, these two projects always add value to your home, allowing you to recoup costs if and when you sell.

Other interesting findings from the survey include:

  • In the next two years, 72 percent of homeowners surveyed plan to decorate or redecorate, 40 percent plan to remodel or construct an addition, while 10 percent are planning to build a custom home.
  • 57 percent of homeowners planning to complete a project in the next two years will hire a general contractor, 35 percent a kitchen or bath professional and 32 percent will hire a carpet or flooring professional. Thirty percent are planning to hire an architect, 26 percent an interior designer and 24 percent a landscape architect or designer.
  • About half?52 percent?say they will save money by completing some projects themselves.
  • The largest projects in terms of average spend in the last five years were custom home builds ($577,000), complete home remodels ($193,000), pool additions or replacements ($34,000) and kitchen remodels ($25,000).

Feel free to reach out if you would like to find out if and how your remodeling project will affect the value of your home, or if you would like recommendations on credible professionals to work with.

Justice Department: Texas State Agencies Paid Women Less Than Male Equals

Female workers at two state agencies were allegedly being paid thousands of dollars less to do the same work as their male counterparts.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against two Texas agencies last week, alleging that a group of women employed by the state in 2010 were making thousands of dollars a year less than the men who worked in their department -- even though the men and the women "all performed work requiring substantially the same responsibility," according to the lawsuit.

The women -- Monica Bosquez Mota, Tina Lewis and Dalinda Newby -- all worked for the Texas Department of Rural Affairs in 2009, before that agency was dissolved and its legal obligations were passed along to the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas General Land Office, the two agencies named as defendants in the suit.

Bosquez Mota filed a discrimination charge against the TDRA in 2009, then the department allegedly gave pay bumps to Bosquez Mota, Lewis, Newby and a fourth woman who shared their title the following year, according to the Justice Department lawsuit. Before their pay raises, none of the women were making more than $72,522 a year, the suit alleges, while the lowest-paid male member of their team with the same title made $79,631 a year.

Following the pay raises, the suit claims, the women were making salaries that were "closer, but not equal to, the salaries of similarly situated men performing substantially the same work."

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples told the Houston Chronicle that the Department of Justice was taking "an unnecessary shot at Texas" with the suit "for obvious political purposes." Staples called the DoJ's press release on the matter "grossly misleading."

While the Texas case has yet to be resolved, it's not the first time employers have been accused of paying women less than men to do the same job. Women nationwide earn just 77 cents for every dollar men earn, and the gap seems to persist no matter what occupation you're looking at, according to research by the Institute for Women's Policy Research.

In Texas, the disparity is actually a bit smaller than the national average -- Texas women reportedly earn 80 cents for every dollar that Texas men make -- but there's still a large gap in male and female earning power.

Legislation came before the Senate last month that, if it passed, would have helped shrink the pay disparity between men and women. The bill, known as the Paycheck Fairness Act, would have required employers to demonstrate that any pay differences between men and women in their workplace arise from work-related reasons like education and experience.

But Senate Republicans closed ranks against the bill, and blocked it from passing.

Delta passenger thought needle was a toothpick

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Jim Tonjes was high above North America when he bit into a hot turkey sandwich aboard a Delta Air Lines flight and felt a sudden jab in his mouth.

Glancing down, he noticed what looked like a sewing needle in the food. Another passenger on the plane reported the same thing.

At first, he thought a toothpick meant to hold the sandwich together had punctured the roof of his mouth. When he pulled it out, "it was a straight needle, about one inch long, with sharp points on both ends."

Now U.S. and European authorities are trying to determine how the needles got into meals served on at least four Delta flights from Amsterdam to the U.S. and why anyone would place them there.

"We are keeping all options open because at this moment, we have no idea why somebody or something put needles inside the sandwiches," said Robert van Kapel, a spokesman for Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The FBI and the airport's police department have opened criminal investigations. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration said it does not view the matter as a threat to national security.

A Delta spokeswoman said the needles were found Sunday in six sandwiches on four flights. Passengers discovered four of them. The flights included one to Minneapolis, one to Seattle and two to Atlanta.

Tonjes was returning after a visit to Amsterdam for his mother-in-law's 90th birthday. The nine-hour flight was about 90 minutes from Minneapolis when flight attendants offered Tonjes, who was seated in business class, a cold Mediterranean salad or the hot turkey sandwich.

"I'll be very honest, the first bite, I thought, 'Boy, this is pretty good,'" Tonjes said. "It was the second bite that got me."

Now Tonjes is on a 28-day course of pills (at a cost of $1,400) aimed at warding off any infection, including hepatitis or HIV. His doctors have asked the FBI to tell them right away if they find any residue on the needle.

The sandwiches were made by Gate Gourmet, one of the world's largest airline caterers, with facilities on five continents.

The company serves many airlines, but only Delta flights appeared to be affected. The company said it was investigating. Spokesman David Fisher declined to elaborate.

Delta Air Lines Inc. spokeswoman Kristin Baur said security has been stepped up at all of the Gate Gourmet facilities used by the airline. Delta is also using more prepackaged food.

Gate Gourmet was founded in 1992 to cater Swissair flights and grew by taking over other airline caterers, including that of British Airways. It went into private ownership in 2003.

Even though U.S. airlines no longer serve free meals in coach on domestic flights, the airline catering business is still a big industry. Gate Gourmet provides food for 9,700 flights per day. That's 250 million meals a year from 122 flight kitchens.

Those kitchens are often not on airport grounds, so meals are taken by truck to a "sterile" area where planes are parked. The TSA monitors the area in the U.S. Local authorities monitor it at overseas airports.

"Food delivery to airports is a very strict process," said Erroll Southers, a former FBI agent who was the chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence for the police department at Los Angeles World Airports. Truck drivers get background checks, and "those trucks are inspected for everything from sealed packages to explosive devices," said Southers, who is also managing director of counter-terrorism at TAL Global Corp., an international security consulting service.

The needles are a reminder that insiders ? people who work within the industry and have passed a background check ? are among the biggest threats to aviation security, Southers said.

Gate Gourmet's ads for cooks say applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check. The TSA declined to discuss the security process.

Ton Scherrenberg, chairman of the VNC union that represents some 7,000 Dutch cabin personnel, said cabin crews check prepared food for foreign objects when they open catering packages, "but you can't check every single sandwich."

When the needles were discovered on the first Delta flight, a message went out to other Delta flights, which is why some of the needles were found before they got to passengers. The TSA said it "immediately notified all U.S. air carriers with flights from Schiphol to ensure awareness."

On board Tonjes' flight, he pushed the flight attendant call button as soon as he found his needle. A few minutes later, another passenger nearby did the same thing. He said flight attendants offered to call ahead for an ambulance.

"When we landed, it was very, very impressive. When they opened the door, it was flooded with customs agents, police, paramedics and firefighters. It was the whole jetway full of people."

The FBI interviewed him for about three hours. He said he was told the remaining sandwiches were X-rayed, and a third needle was found.

Gate Gourmet was cited by the FDA in 2005 for failing to keep meat at proper temperatures and for the presence of live flies and roaches near its salad production area, plus other violations.

Roy Costa, who runs food safety consulting firm Environ Health Associates in Deland, Fla., and used to be an auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services for more than 20 years, said food preparation standards are not as tight in Europe as in the U.S.

"Everything we do over here, we do because the (Food and Drug Administration) requires it," he said. "There's just a huge hole there."

Richard Branson confirms Virgin Galactic's first space tourism flight will launch next year with him on board

Richard Branson has long said that he'd be on board Virgin Galactic's first commercial space tourism flight, and he's now confirmed that will take place sometime next year with his two adult children along for the ride (a bit of a delay from the company's original 2011 target). That trip will of course be made with the company's SpaceShipTwo craft, which has already completed a number of test flights, and which is capable of flying 100 kilometers (or just over 60 miles) above the Earth for a planned two and a half hour flight with five minutes of weightlessness. As the AP notes, some 529 people have already signed up for the $200,000 per person rides into space, each of whom will have to take part in a week of training prior to their trip. Booking's can still be made on Virgin Galactic's website.
